Battle For Terra (2009) CAM XviD-THS
far above usual American animation in story and style. It is a little similar in theme to Wall-E but I and my kids preferred it. I hope it gets the chance of a proper UK release. We saw it at a preview (sci-fi film festival). It was interesting to see the Alien on the human spaceship creeping around and realise they had reversed the usual "Alien" type scenario. The technology and wildlife and culture of Terra was fabulously realised. Anyone would enjoy the sight of the flying whales. The dusty terrain under the terran clouds was eerie and beautiful. Although I avoided it I imagine its far above the Star Wars CGI stuff that has come out recently. Its more like some of the Miyazaki films such as Nausica or Mononoke. Go and see it!

In The Loop 2009
In.The.Loop.LIMITED.DVDRip.XviD-DMT
I was expecting something along the lines of Wag The Dog and I was not disappointed albeit in a much more dry and British fashion. Throughout it relied on the grim and often cringe worthy humour that the Office made its name with and for the most part it is done well.
True the plot is very much an aside and at no point are we allowed to know what war is being alluded to or what time frame the film is set in. The characters strongly resemble the major players in UK government at the time of the declaration of war on Iraq and as such allows the viewer to draw very striking parallels to the position of the MPs involved, most strikingly that of Clare Short.
This is not a political satire for the faint hearted as the language is consistently obscene and it is certainly not a light hearted affair.

I got a feeling while watching Duplicity that I should consider script and the whole movie very smart and witty but in reality it's typical hollywoodish attack on my brain cells. Like it was written for 5 years old audience.
A not very good and I must say empty story of corporate espionage and love affair of two spies Ray and Claire tries to keep the attention with withholding the information, attempts to mislead you from the obvious, etc. But even these attempts couldn't do much good for the movie to become better.
The secret spies are after, a scene where we find out what actually is the secret can give one a final clue about the ending which the filmmakers were so desperately trying to hide. Well, maybe next time.
I can't even recommend watching this film for brain relaxation as it may make you angry.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
I saw this movie over the weekend. When it was over, I kind of sighed, shrugged and said it was okay.
I gave the movie a 5 which I think is pretty darn generous. Here's the positives of the movie. The actors are very good. Hugh Jackman, Liev, Ryan Reynolds are all very good actors, and each of them play their roles well. There was action, action, explosions, and more explosions. There certainly wasn't any shortage of eye candy. I think most Wolverine fans would probably like this movie.
Here's the negatives. We all learned the hard way when X-Men 3 came out, that Fox could seem to care less about the source material. They just want to make action moves with lots of special effects. Wolverine is a testament to that same disappointing philosophy. While Wolverine fans may like the movie, "Marvel" fans will probably feel a little ill.
I'm surprised that they haven't figured out yet why Marvel's movies are blockbusters (Iron Man, The Hulk), and thiers are always sub-par. Marvel uses good stories, acting, and smart witty scripts to keep us interested. Every half baked, killed off for the movie, or completely ruined character Fox throws in there just ruins the experience for a fan somewhere. Marvel may modernize the stories, but they respect the source material. Not only does that make comic fans happy, but the stories tend to make more sense, and have more relatable characters.
On a side note, the fact that Fox apparently has the rights to Deadpool makes me want to cry. Give it back to Marvel so we can get a decent movie, without blades coming out of his arms and lasers out his eyes.

12 Rounds Extreme Cut 2009
The movie has a good idea and some really seat-gripping excitement. It reminds me of Die Hard with a Vengeance but even more exciting. The plot is good with enough twists to keep everyone's interests.
I have only one negative thing to say...and this is that I hate the type of camera work in this movie. It seems to be the latest rage in movies...to have jerky-action shots. Personally I think it looks amateurish and makes the watcher slightly nauseous. What a shame to do that to such an exciting film.
Even with that type of photography, I would still recommend this film and have done so. I had never seen any advertising for this film and would not have gone to see it had I not looked up a synopsis of it.

Running On Empty Dreams (2009)
Being an out lesbian of 15 years, I've seen most lesbian films made.
I can safely say this film was by far the worst I've seen. It was seemingly written by a homophobe who knew nothing about what it means to be a lesbian. As with most mainstream gay films, it seems the best solution to a bad marrige is death; assuming redemption is needed by all gay people. The plot was truly insulting to women and to lesbians; and very predictable.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen 2009
As a huge Transformers cartoon fan and awesomely enchanted by the first movie I went to see T2 without second thoughts. What I saw in this 145 minutes movie is all I ever wanted to see...Pure transformers. This time special FX are improved and you get to see whats happening when Autobots and Decepticons are fighting.
The movie score is similar to the previous one but can't help to say that Steve Jablonsky did an awesome job. The movie has its pro's and con's but con's don't have such a huge impact as many people believe. Firstly let me address this, Of course and we don't see many human dialog in the movie. Your are watching transformers. Second, you don't get to see many autobots but I believe that Bumblebee and Jetfire even the little guy or the twins steal the show. Now for real life cast, Hotie Fox is just another decoration in the movie without adding nothing to the story. Sam from the other hand is still the same character you've saw in the first movie which of coarse is good. To all the Bay haters out there and to culture geeks, this movie is not about realism or have a deeper meaning hidden inside, this movie is all about...the same thing that made us love the cartoon series and... "To all the fans out there, hidden among the stars, the movie is pure awesomeness, you have to watch it"

Goal! 3 (2009)
I'm glad I didn't see this at the cinema or I'd have had to ask for my money back!! What happened to the great story line in the first 2 films?? We watched this to find out what happened to Santi and his wife being pregnant but she wasn't even mentioned, the whole story was brushed under the carpet in one line!! And what was with the weird trashy porno film set??? Its like they took a load of random ideas and stuck them together (not very well either!!) Have you seen how bad it looks when they use the real World Cup footage and stick the actors in front? I will say one thing, it did have us laughing.. but not for the right reasons!!

Full of the kind of humor that makes even 9th graders groan rather than laugh and without any smarts whatsoever this is one of the most unenjoyable films I have seen in a long time.
Every opportunity to flash some T&A is taken, but my reaction was so what, and it is a movie that aims to be the most sexist, and definitely not the sexiest, movie of all time.
Of the 117 votes cast as I write this 33.3% gave this 10 (err... note to publicity department, flack is OK - but let's keep it less blatant next time...OK?) and a stunning 30% gave this a ONE.... ooops!
I'm sure there is an audience for this, who knows maybe it'll be someone's favorite ever movie - but more than a horrible, horrible plot and a dreadful script is the damn awful acting where lines are delivered without any attempt to get us involved.

Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs 2009
Not a bad flick. I don't remember liking the first one, skipped the second one and the only reason I went to see this one was because it was a "sneak preview" that started right after the movie I had gone to see and it was in 3D. I recommend seeing this one in 3D as it was worth the extra couple dollars. I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The story was really stupid and didn't make any sense (dinosaurs living under the ice???), but it kept me interested the entire movie, partly because of the hilarious side story with the acorn loving animal and an excellent job by Simon Pegg as Buck the weasel(I just got done watching his TV show "Spaced" so maybe I am a little partial), who I had no idea was going to be in the movie.
This movie also did a wonderful job of keeping everyone in the audience interested. The theater was packed and the only things you heard besides the movie was popcorn chomping and laughter, lots of laughter. Definitely worth seeing at the theater.

Border Town (2009)
We've seen the story here done a few times and better at that, but for an indie with a low budget it's watchable, even entertaining, if you get past some of the predictability and the rote, many times laughable dialog. To be in a genre with past masters like Sergio Leonne and even newer homage paying directors like Robert Rodriquez, well, the going is tough as it sets the bar almost beyond indie reach (I know I'm going be called for this as Rodriquez did amazing stuff as an indie, but he definitely is more the exception than the rule).

Knowing (2009)
Don't let Nicolas Cage's name on the marquee scare you away, this is the director of The Crow and Dark City given free reign, and it is amazing, assuming you accept a revelation about 2/3 of the way in. The ambition here is pretty staggering by the end.
Having just seen this, I predict viewers of it will fall into two camps: unabashed love or extreme dislike save for a few scenes (the plane and subway scenes come to mind). How you accept the final third will determine which camp you are placed in. I was confused by Ebert giving it four stars and then hearing others whose opinions I also often agree with eviscerate it, but after seeing it this makes total sense.
I fall into the unabashed love category, and absolutely did not expect to going in. My brother Doug felt the same way. I think Cage actually gives a good performance, and feel like most of the criticism on his part is either residual from other aspects of the movie people don't like or just bandwagon stuff that he admittedly wrought upon himself with multiple disasters such as LaBute's Wicker Man.

The Hangover (2009)
I have to start by saying that my friends and I have been talking about this movie and watching the trailers for weeks, so our expectations were really high.
With that being said, this movie didn't just live up to the expectations, it was one of the funniest movie I have seen in a long time. Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, and Ed Helms are all very good. Galifianakis steals the show at times. It is hilarious from the beginning. Mike Tyson brings a few laughs and Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong) is a great twist. Do yourself a favor and go see this movie, it is worth every penny. Just got out of the midnight showing and I'm going back tomorrow night.

Angels and Demons (2009)
Symbologist Robert Langdon (Hanks) is called to Rome to help decipher the mystery behind the Illuminati before a new science experiment blows up the city.
The Da Vinci Code broke records in 2006 but for the vast majority of Dan Brown followers it did not do his award winning book justice and though running at a good 2 and a half hours, seemed to bore many.
Having read the book, I was perhaps one of the few who enjoyed Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou attempt to solve the mystery of the murder in the Louvre but for Angels and Demons the scales were raised once more as lead star and director return.
Having asked around, most people seem to prefer Angels and Demons to The Da Vinci code for an entertaining read and it seems as critiques and fans, whilst still not fully justified, prefer this latest adaptation to the 2006 release.
This Howard picture certainly has a more clinical energy and exercise to it as unlike Da Vinci, Tom Hanks' Robert Langdon has only one night to solve the mysterious activities of the forgotten Illuminati in the Vatican and because of the time limitations, the action and desperation up the ante and deliver an excitement that certainly beats The Da Vinci code but also generates plenty of twists and stunning murder sequences.
The interesting factor of this 2009 release is the constant elements being justified for the murders. Earth, wind, water and fire are all included in drastic and powerful sequences to pronounce a feeling of overall power to the situation.
This really does justify the tag of thriller with a constant tension and sharp drama with the issues and beliefs once more given a full working over.
Just like 3 years ago, there are many debates and discoveries of symbols once believed to be lost forever and Langdon is again the key character to show everyone the light in and amongst the controversy of other pressing circumstances.
It is fair to say Dan Brown is a complex writer; he certainly likes to cram issues and dramas in amongst his action and thrilling sequences. As well as trying to discover the Illuminati, there is also the scenario of the election of a new pope, the dealings with a new scientific experiment and the power of Religion is again present. All interesting to discover and listen to, if occasionally the debates and dialogue tend to send your mind drifting but as there is so much in the novel, this was always likely.
Ron Howard, who kept a frankly ordinary type of direction rolling in Da Vinci, returns in perhaps the worst way possible. His jerky ever moving camera styling does nothing to keep the pressure up, and we can never fully accept what is happening on screen thanks to this frankly awfully portrayed style. He is certainly no Paul Greengrass and this is by no means Bourne.
Slick and stylized this is faster and more interesting than Da Vinci

Anaconda 4: Trail Of Blood (2009)
I saw this on Sci-Fi Channel on it's first air date, and I must say it certainly exceeded my expectations after seeing it's predecessor. The acting in this movie is actually pretty well done; something I was not expecting. Gore is also 20 times better, way better than 3's ketchup packet squeeze effect.
But, as always giant snake movies have their cons. Don't expect anything special in the graphics department- the snake in the first Anaconda was even better than the one in this movie. The story is also exceedingly unbelievable, and at some points just plain dumb; the snake regenerates it's head after it gets popped...
The conclusion? This installment in the series is pretty much on par with the first one. It has plenty of action, and for once not every supporting character dies (cliche repeated in every Sci-Fi movie). Only watch this only if you have an open mind or if you are in the mood for some good cheesy fun.

Underworld Rise of the Lycans (2009)
To begin bluntly, I am a fan of the Underworld series, so have no delusion about that. It's not so much that I am an action junkie, or am hot for Kate Beckinsale (as hot as she may be), no, it is that I am thoroughly impressed and somewhat enthralled by the whole vampire/werewolf world and its complex history that Len Wiseman and company have conceived.
Laid out in flashbacks in the first Underworld film, the shady history of vampire betrayal and the beginning of the so called blood feud between the bloodsuckers and their once slaves, The Lycans, was wrought. Helmed by a new director, Patrick Tatopolous, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans delves deep into the lore and shady doings of one of the first vampire covens and their cruel treatment of the monstrous werewolf servants, born of the first true 'Lycan', Lucien. As the Underworld films have progressed their core has only become more rewarding and labyrinthine. Don't be mistaken, this film will win over few converts, but the world that has been created throughout the trilogy is worthy of praise.
A monster only be association, Lucien (Michael Sheen) is the prized pet of the vampires. His disease gives the gift of slaves and daytime guardians for the death dealers, lead by the powerful Victor (A fiery Bill Nighy) and graced by the presence of his beloved daughter Sonja (Rhona Mitra who takes over in the absence of Beckinsale). A forbidden love exists however between Sonja and Lucien and the deceptions and betrayal that ensues leads to a rebellion of the Lycan slaves against the silky vampires that will last a thousand years.
The narrative plays out in almost a Shakespearian way, with the powerful father and the forbidden affair. Backed with constant action and delightfully over the top and charismatic performances by Sheen and Nighy, this instalment while beginning to wear simply from overindulgence, is a boatload of fun, and constantly entertaining. If anything drags the film down, it is that certain portions of this story have been drilled home by the sequel Underworld: Evolution and it begins to wear on the audience. The film, despite its new director, looks exactly like the previous films and the look suits the medieval theme nicely. With such an elaborate history at it back, this instalment mixes a few things points up, but that isn't to say Evolution fudged them up. I'm sure upon even greater scrutiny, even more elements of the narrative would begin to erode, but I for one am happy to take it as is and appreciate the fable in its entirety.
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is certainly nothing completely new, but style and characters go a long way in a film like this, and with larger then life characters who are impossible not to hate and love in turn, the film achieves a new level of gravitas. So, if you haven't been bitten by the Underworld curse yet, you may want to take a look, because if loving werewolves and vampires duking it out at the castle wall in the name of love is wrong, then I don't want to be right.
